In the face of stiff opposition and strong arguments against, US President Donald Trump has pushed ahead with new trade protection measures for steel and aluminium. He has even gone as far as describing trade wars as good. The evidence, however, points to the fact that many countries, including America, benefit more than they lose from lower tariffs. Sadly, with the threat of retaliation, there is a risk that these benefits will be further eroded as a result of Trump’s misguided shot in anger.
