Unit 3 of State-owned Eskom’s Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme has been brought into commercial operation, effectively adding 333 MW into the South African power grid.

All four units at Ingula are now commercial and produce a combined 1 332 MW.

“The commercial operation of Unit 3 completes the Ingula Pumped Storage Scheme project. This will further strengthen security of power supply to South African homes and businesses,” Eskom acting CEO Matshela Koko said.

Unit 4 went into commercial operation in June 2016, while units 1 and 2 went into commercial operation in August.

Ingula is Africa’s newest and largest pumped storage scheme and the fourteenth-largest pumped storage scheme in the world.
