Eskom on Wednesday announced that it was rescheduling electricity interruptions to three Eastern Cape municipalities.

The power utility said it had planned interruptions of electricity supplies to struggling municipalities that include Raymond Mhlaba, Walter Sisulu and Inxuba Yethemba. Eskom wants to recover monies it is owed by municipalities that have not paid their bills for bulk electricity supplies.

In a terse statement, Eskom said in the last few days it has been engaging the affected municipalities and the provincial government regarding the pending interruptions. As a result, the interruptions of power supplies were put off to Friday.

“We are still hopeful that we will be able to find mutually acceptable solutions before Friday,” said Eskom.

“We firmly believe that the interruption of supply to any customer for non-payment is always the option of last resort and we will continue to engage the municipalities over the next two days in an attempt to avert the supply interruptions.”
