The Department of Labour (DoL) plans to open the Employment Equity (EE) reporting season exactly one month after the promulgation of amendments to the regulations.

The EE reporting period, compelling all employers – small or large – to review and report their EE status every year, would open on September 1 and close on October 1 for manual reporting and on January 15 for online submissions.

Failure to make submissions would attract penalties, as stipulated by the newly amended Employment Equity Amendment Act of 2013 and its regulations, which took effect from August 1.

With the reporting season nearing, the ongoing DoL national roadshows, which kicked off in Mpumalanga in July, would culminate next week with two sessions planned in Centurion, in Tshwane, and Sandton, in Johannesburg.

This year’s road shows intended to create awareness of and compliance with the amended EE legislation.

The amendments emerged as South Africa had failed to sufficiently transform the labour market and ensure full participation of all South Africans in the economy.

The new laws ensured equal pay for same work or similar work for employees working for the same employer and introduced measures to protect employees who have been unfairly discriminated against.
