VANCOUVER (miningweekly.com) – A contractor has died in a mining accident at TSX- and NYSE-listed Agnico Eagle’s Kittilä mine, in northern Finland.

The miner said Thursday that the accident occurred underground on level 325 of the mine, however, details and exact cause are not yet known.

According to Agnico, the Kittilä’s mine rescue team was immediately activated and emergency services personnel were called to the site. An investigation has been started and the company is working with the local authorities to determine the exact cause of the incident.

The Kittilä mine is in the Lapland region of northern Finland, about 900 km north of Helsinki and 150 km north of the Arctic Circle. The 4 000 t/d operation employs about 900 people and produced about 180 000 oz of gold in 2015.
