Southern African consultants in the elevators
industry KZN Elevator Consultants has been awarded a contract valued at R6-million to modernise eight lifts for a property owners and management company.

The upgrade, which involves the installation of new control systems and mechanics at an
office block, started in August this year and will be carried out over the next four months.

Besides the installations, the company also offers a variety of service solutions, including regulatory inspections in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, audits and surveys, as well as project management and accident and incident investigations.

The audits and surveys help the client to establish whether it is
receiving the proper levels of service in terms of the maintenance contract. It also indicates adherence to the performance
parameters of the elevators.

KZN Elevator Consultants
director Sanjeev Singh says that the industry is steady but that the market is showing a decline in new installations, as this aspect is directly related to the building industry and new developments taking place.

“The modernisation market, however, will more than likely experience a 15% to 25% growth owing to favourable interest rates and a multitude of competitive packages offered by suppliers. Further, phased modernisation packages will become more
affordable to building owners,” explains Singh, who is also qualified as a registered lift inspector.

Singh also believes that the market for maintenance will be significantly more competitive than before owing to the emergence of a multitude of local
independent companies.

“Building owners might favour more affordable pricing modules
offered by local companies. The obvious implication is that the traditional growth in their maintenance portfolio may become stagnant,” he says.

The company states that the biggest challenges facing this industry are the heavy
reliance on imported products and building owners who do not invest in elevators that comply with most standards.

“Building owners who do not invest in improved performance and safety and the preservation of their asset value only place themselves in a position of risk.
“Proper consultation before the installation of a system not only prevents unwanted
legal complications but also improves the worth of the industry,” says Singh.

As part of its services, the company also offers a programme to assist any individual or organisation with training.
“We conduct technical and nontechnical specialised industry-related training com-
ponents to try to overcome the demand for education and skills in the industry.”

The company is also primarily involved in delivering services to sub-Saharan Africa and offshore operations in West Africa.
