Mpumalanga road rehabilitation contract awarded

The Roadcrete Africa division of JSE- listed construction and engineering group Basil Read has been awarded a contract by the South African National Roads Agency for the rehabilitation of 26 km of the R23 national road between Platrand and Standerton, in the Lekwa district, in Mpumalanga.

The 24-month contract is valued at R358-million. Work started on July 1. The scope of work entails the rehabilita- tion, widening and strengthening of the existing road, as well as structural works, include the upgrading and broadening of several bridges and major culverts.

Other works envisage include the cleaning, repairing and extension of existing minor culverts, the construction of subsurface and side-drains, as well as the clearing, grubbing and replacement of road markings and road studs.

Roadcrete has also secured another, smaller roads contract from the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality.

The R11-million contract is for the construction of water and sewerage network systems and toilet structures in Etwatwa, Extension 18.

Work started on June 10, and will be completed in October.
