The National Business Initiative (NBI), which heads the Private Sector Energy Efficiency (PSEE) programme, states that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa’s (Nersa’s) approving the increase in energy costs has meant that companies have to find ways of being more energy efficient.

Nersa has approved an increase in electricity costs by 47% between April 2013 to March 2018.

“Despite the considerable potential to reduce costs by managing energy more efficiently, many companies are still not proactively identifying opportunities that will immediately enhance energy efficiency,” says NBI head of energy Val Geen.

She adds that achieving greater levels of energy efficiency is a vital driver of business and the South African economy, but it does not need to be a cumbersome or burdensome undertaking. With rapidly escalating energy costs and security of supply challenges, it should be regarded as an opportunity and as a companywide initiative that will provide long-term financial and reputational benefits.

“PSEE programmes aim to assist companies of all sizes – from small companies to large entities – in improving energy efficiency, saving costs and enhancing long-term business competitiveness and sustainability.”

Geen adds that experienced third-party consultancies provide their services in aspects, such as energy strategy; green buildings; heating, ventilation and air conditioning; pumps; motors; lighting; and compressed-air and industrial processes, for companies. The consultancies are contracted by the PSEE and overseen by a team of professional programme managers and account managers.

She indicates that, to date, more than 200 companies have already signed up for the PSEE programme. Although some of these companies had focused significantly on energy efficiency prior to their signing up, further savings opportunities have been identified through their participation in the PSEE programme.
