Mining major BHP on Tuesday confirmed the death of a contractor employee in a vehicle incident at its Saraji mine, in Queensland’s Bowen basin.
In a brief statement conveying sympathy to the individual’s family, friends and colleagues, BHP mentioned that it is working collaboratively with the Mines Inspectorate and relevant authorities.
Operations at Saraji, which forms part of the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance, are suspended.
“This is the worst news we can ever receive,” said Mining and Energy Union Queensland president Mitch Hughes. “We are devastated that a coal miner is not returning home at the end of their shift.
“Our hearts go out to friends and family. We offer our deepest thanks to first responders and support to workmates who may be traumatised by the events.
“Union safety inspectors are at the site to conduct a thorough investigation, and we will ensure no stone is left unturned in understanding what has occurred and in preventing future fatalities and injuries.”
