The cleaner fuels project will upgrade the Mina Abdullah and Mina Al-Ahmadi refineries to increase their daily throughput. The entire refinery development project will increase the refineries’ capacity from the current 736 000 barrels per stream day to 800 000 barrels per stream day.

The KNPC has awarded Samsung Engineering a contract, valued at $3.8-billion, for the Mina Abdullah I refinery as part of the cleaner fuels project.

The Mina Abdullah I refinery package will be executed by a joint venture comprising Samsung Engineering (43%), the UK’s Petrofac (47%) and CB&I Netherlands (10%).

The lump-sum engineering, procurement and construction scope of work includes providing 19 new refining units at Mina Abdullah and revamping five existing units at the Shouaiba refinery site and the accompanying inter-refinery transfer lines.

The project will be completed over four years.
