Celebrity baker fights rhino poaching

22nd August 2014 By: Jonathan Rodin

The Good Food & Wine Show, which took place at the Coca-Cola Dome, from July 31 to August 3, hosted a life-size rhino cake to make a stand for the endangered rhino and raise money to support the cause.

The cake was made and donated by Cake-Extreme co-owner Paul Vieira and US Cake Boss Buddy Valastro.

Cake slices were sold at R20 apiece to raise funds for environmental organisation Endangered Wildlife Trust and its work to save the rhino.

The cake was made up of 170 slabs of vanilla sponge cake comprising 180 kg of cake flour, 9 kg of baking powder, 120 kg of sugar, 2 400 eggs, 90 ℓ of water, 120 ℓ of cooking oil, 300 kg of butter cream and 100 kg of icing fondant that covered the cake. Buddy Valastro is a fourth-generation master baker, television personality and author. In the past year, Valastro and his family have opened several new bakeries, including one on the US west coast, in Las Vegas, and a restaurant called Buddy V’s, as well as a baking facility in Jersey City. This has enabled Valastro to fulfil his dream of shipping his family’s products across the US. His three books – The Essential Cake Boss, Cooking Italian with the Cake Boss, Family Celebrations with the Cake boss – were all on show at the Good Food & Wine Show.
