The City of Cape Town will be undertaking a R20-million roadworks project along Camps Bay drive, for the first time in 30 years, with road closures expected for general traffic from April 20.
The project would see the road being widened by 1.4 m on the Table Mountain side between Geneva drive and Rontree avenue, while the centre line of Camps Bay drive would be shifted by 0.7 m, effectively widening each lane by 0.7 m.
Further, the road surface would be improved by removing the top surface and replacing it with recycled material and asphalt, while some of the sharp corners along Camps Bay drive would be slackened to allow for the safe passage of buses in opposite directions.
The road surface between Rontree avenue and Houghton road would be rehabilitated and the damaged culvert on Victoria road, in Bakoven, would be replaced. This would require a stop-and-go controlled traffic accommodation at this section of the road, while construction activity was under way.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the local government said residents and visitors could expect major traffic delays along the alternatives routes to and from Camps Bay.
The project would be completed by September.
“This major upgrade will significantly improve the road condition and safety for road users and cannot be postponed any longer,” it added.
City of Cape Town MMC for transport councillor Brett Herron urged road users to “familiarise themselves” with the alternative routes well in advance.
About 14 000 vehicles traveled along Camps Bay drive every day and commuters would have to be accommodated on other roads to enter or exit Camps Bay.
Commuters could make use of Geneva drive as an alternative route to enter or exit Camps Bay.
