BEHL commissions groove dressing machine

11th February 2014

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), based in New Delhi, India, has commissioned a new groove dressing machine of type KR I 30/38 CNC, supplied by SMS Meer, Germany. With the new machine and the push bench plant upgraded by SMS Meer, the roll stands of the stretch reducing mill will be fitted by BHEL with the latest roll pass technology in future.

The groove dressing machine supplied by SMS Meer machines the grooves in the rolls fully automatically. The roll diameters to be machined are 300 millimeters and 380 millimeters.

The machine is equipped with a measuring system sensing stand and roll measurements automatically. The rolls are machined at the front end of the stand; therefore any groove design can be produced. The technology from SMS Meer enables the edge radii to be dressed in one pass.

The ceramic cutting tools in the holder system enable good milling conditions and short changing times. The grooves are machined automatically in two passes with a high degree of precision. The whole process takes less than 30 minutes.

Changes to the groove shape can be made easily by quickly re- programming the system. The machine is also linked to works databases and control systems, such as the CARTA® technology system (Computer Aided Rolling Technology Application) from SMS Meer.
