Trade union Solidarity and ArcelorMittal South Africa (AMSA) have signed a three-year wage deal.
Solidarity metal industry head Marius Croucamp said AMSA employees would receive an increase of either 6.2% or 6.5%, depending on the employee’s job level, for this year.
Wage increases for 2016 and 2017 would be equal to consumer price inflation plus 1% of the previous year’s remuneration. In both years, the wage increase would be a minimum of 7% and it could be renegotiated if consumer price inflation exceeded certain limits.
Employees in the bargaining unit would also see various allowances, such as medical, shift, on-call and housing allowances, increase by the same percentage as their salaries.
The agreement applied to AMSA employees in the bargaining unit and who were employed at the company's branches in Pretoria, Durban, Vanderbijlpark, Newcastle, Vereeniging and Saldanha.
Solidarity represented some 3 000 AMSA employees.
