Altech division secures R1.2bn broadband project

Allied Technology (Altech) Alcom Matomo has been tasked with connecting 316 Gauteng provincial government buildings, 45 identified Thusong Centres, 20 priority townships, nine identified economic development zones and six urban renewal nodes to the Internet.

The R1.2-billion, five-year project comprised building, operating and maintaining a province-wide 1 600 km high-speed fibre-optic broadband network.

The broadband network would provide network coverage to 95% of Gauteng’s population and deliver voice and data services for 130 000 Gauteng provincial government employees, explained Allied Electronic (Altron) Telecommunications, Multimedia and Information Technology group executive and Altech CEO Craig Venter.

After a five-year period, the network would be transferred to the provincial government.

Altech’s partner, Chinese global technology giant Huawei, would provide a large component of the network equipment.
