Agricultural industry association Agri SA has called on South Africans to work together to build the economy, as the country is facing a “potential perfect storm”.

“South Africa is a tinderbox at the moment, with various risks playing out.

“Our economy and international standing is the worst it’s been in 22 years since the advent of democracy.  Low economic growth and high inflation coupled with a dismal rand creates a challenging macroeconomic environment. The world does not trust us anymore,” said Agri SA president Johannes Möller

He pointed out that the national drought presented the biggest natural disaster in 30 years, with job losses, further economic decline and social instability “being core to this reality”.

Agri SA also stressed that violent crime, in general, as well as on farms were reaching “epidemic proportions” and said that government’s divisive statements were further polarising communities.
