A.b.e. Construction Chemicals, South African distributors of the renowned VIP range of high performance coatings, supplied a special VIP elastomeric coating with reflective cooling qualities for the waterproofing of two of the roofs of the Standard Bank Art Gallery in the Johannesburg CBD.
Noel Abendroth, a.b.e.’s VIP High Performance Coatings Solutions Manager, says VIP QuickSeal Reflect-Silver - a pure Polyurea formulation - was applied to about 380m2 of the Standard Bank Art Gallery roofs by the a.b.e.-approved applicator, Custom Linings. “There had been several unsuccessful attempts at sealing the roofs of the building on the corner of Simmonds and Frederick streets, so Custom Linings had to remove all the failed layers right down to the concrete base, before re-screeding the surface and applying VIP QuickSeal Reflect-Silver which was selected not only as waterproofing but also because the VIP product will help lower the temperature in the gallery, which contains valuable artworks.
The fact that VIP QuickSeal Reflect-Silver does not require any top coat and is maintenance-free also influenced the decision to choose this product for the project,” Abendroth explained.
VIP QuickSeal Reflect-Silver, provides all the benefits of VIP’s spray-applied, instant curing, seamless membranes but with the added advantage of reflecting the sun’s heat and UV rays. “The reflective lining can be built to any thickness in a single application and applied in any environment. Very hot, very cold or even very humid conditions will not affect its instant curing capabilities nor the physical performance of VIP QuickSeal Reflect-Silver. What’s more, you can walk on it within a few minutes,” Abendroth adds.
Because of its reflective properties, Quickseal Reflect-Silver’s typical applications include waterproofing roofs of factories, power stations, schools, offices, and residences in very hot climatic conditions, car park roofing and decking, and the waterproofing of areas exposed to high winds, loads, abrasion and impact.
“VIP QuickSeal Reflect-Silver provides excellent adhesion with standard preparation procedure to nearly all substrates including concrete, steel, aluminium, fibres, wood or foam. It also has exceptional tensile and structural strength, as well as high elongation at the break,” he states.
