Ghanaian conglomerate company LMI Holdings, through its subsidiary Helios Solar Company, is building a 16.82 MW solar rooftop power system on its logistics subsidiary IWC's mega-warehouse, which is located in the seaport and trading centre Tema Freezone.

The project uses solar power equipment company Sungrow SG350HX PV inverters and MV Station MVS4480-LV equipment. The installation will comprise of 29 261 solar panels using the latest N-type technology across a rooftop area of 92 000 m² of the IWC mega-warehouse.

Once operational, the solar system is projected to produce 24 750 MWh/y of clean, stable and sustainable electricity, and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 11 000 t/y.

“The Sungrow team is proud to have been selected by [project contractor] Dutch & Co to provide technical solutions for this project which will be Africa’s largest rooftop solar installation. This work aligns with our mission of clean power for all and reinforces our commitment to accelerating the adoption of clean energy solutions and driving innovation in power conversion technology for a sustainable future,” Sungrow said.

Ghana Minister of Energy Dr Matthew Prempeh-Opoku visited the project that employs 128 Ghanaians and expressed his continuing support for the project.

This project was funded by development finance institution the International Finance Corporation as part of a $30-million clean power and water deal with LMI Holdings.

“According to the World Economic Forum, the African continent has huge solar energy potential, which is significantly untapped. We are proud to be playing our part in changing this narrative by designing and installing what will be Africa’s largest solar rooftop project on behalf of Helios and LMI Holdings and to assist Ghana in meeting its climate change targets,” said Dutch and Co GM Herbert Friese.
