The Shukela Training Centre is based in Mount Edgecombe, west of Umhlanga Rocks and boasts a fully equipped engineering training facility with on-campus accommodation. The Shukela Training Centre, a division of the South African Sugar Association, provides training in the Agricultural and Engineering fields.
Artisan Training is provided at this dynamic training facility in Mount Edgecombe. This unique Training Centre is equipped to provide training in Fitting, Fitting and Turning, Electrical, Electronics, Instrumentation, Millwright, Refrigeration and Welding, Boilermaking and Plater Welding.
The Centre provides the institutional training component of qualifications via learnerships and apprenticeships. The Centre is an accredited, de-centralised trade test centre and is accredited by the AgriSETA as a training provider. In addition the Centre has been able to achieve programme approval from various SETAs in order to provide approved training, assessments and moderation for industries that are members of the MERSETA, ESETA CHIETA.
We are also able to provide training in short courses and will tailor-make courses to suit your Company's needs. Included in the short courses are CNC Lathe operation and Laser Alignment. We also have a coal-fired boiler on the campus that is used for boiler regulations and boiler operator training. Sugar processing and laboratory courses are also provided at the Centre.
The Centre is owned by the South African Sugar Industry and was established in 1972 to provide artisan training specifically for the sugar mills in South Africa. It wasn't too long after this that the Sugar Industry recognised that they had established a world-class training facility and opened the Shukela Training Centre doors to all industries. The Shukela Training Centre has a proud history of being the preferred training provider for many industries.
Agricultural Training is specific to the Sugar Industry and provides a support to new entrants into sugarcane farming, as well as ongoing support to existing farmers. The training is operationally based and is mainly conducted on the farm, where farmers and farm workers are taught the basics of sugarcane planting and harvesting according to registered unit standards on the National Qualifications Framework.
