Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) had already started trial production of the 2014 Corolla at its Durban plant, said president and CEO Dr Johan van Zyl on Wednesday, unveiling the vehicle at the Johannesburg International Motor Show. Full production was scheduled to start in January.

TSAM also produced the previous Corolla model.

“Every 40 seconds a Corolla is sold somewhere in the world.”

Van Zyl did not want to quantify the investment required to produce the new Corolla locally, noting only that it was “significant”.

He said the new Corolla model would also be produced for the local and export markets, as was the case with the previous model. He estimated that around 30% of production would be destined for the export market.

The new Corolla would be available in South Africa in the first quarter of next year.
