Independent solar power producer Sonnedix has appointed engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company Juwi as the preferred EPC contractor for the Mulilo Sonnedix Prieska solar photovoltaic (PV) park, in the Northern Cape.

Construction of the 86 MW Mulilo project, which would be Juwi’s largest EPC project to date, was expected to start in July 2014, with commercial operation targeted for the following year.

Sonnedix was selected as a preferred bidder in round three of the Department of Energy’s (DoE’s) Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), with renewable-energy developer Mulilo the co-developer of the project.

“We are proud to be [the] preferred EPC contractor for one of the six solar PV projects within the third round of the DoE’s REIPPPP. We will not only be the EPC contractor, but will also be providing the operations and maintenance [services],“ commented Juwi South Africa MD Greg Austin.

To date, globally, the company had erected around 730 wind turbines with a total capacity of around 1 500 MW, as well as constructed 1 500 solar power plants with a total capacity of around 1 350 MW globally.

Combined, these energy systems produced around five-billion kilowatt hours of clean energy a year.
