Project Description
The project involves the construction of East Africa’s first utility-scale solar plant.

The 8.5 MW solar PV park will be located 60 km from Kigali.

It will increase the country’s power generation capacity by about 8% and contribute towards the Rwanda government’s aim to increase electricity generation capacity fivefold in the country by 2017.

Yearly production is estimated at 16-million kilowatt hours.

The electricity will be fed into the national grid under a 25-year power purchase agreement with the Rwanda Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority.

Value
Scatec, in partnership with Norfund, the Norwegian Investment Fund for Developing Countries and Dutch developer Gigawatt Global Coöperatief, successfully closed on $23.7-million in financing for the solar park in February 2014.

Duration
Construction will start immediately and commercial operation of the park is expected later this year.
