Saulsville–Pretoria train service to resume Friday
Gauteng Metrorail on Thursday announced that the Saulsville – Pretoria rail corridor had been repaired and that trains were expected to be fully operational from Friday morning.
The operation of the line was temporarily suspended following a train collision between the Cor Delfos and Kalafong stations last week.
The announcement followed the lifting of a prohibition directive issued by the Railway Safety Regulator (RSR) on Tuesday. The RSR has now declared the line safe.
Gauteng Metrorail provincial manager Tembela Kulu said that, while rail infrastructure challenges had been largely addressed in the province, theft and damage to trains and associated infrastructure remained a problem and could result in future service cancellations.
“We appeal to our commuters to continue working with Metrorail to protect trains and infrastructure and to report any unusual behaviour observed in operational areas,” he said.
Commuters who were injured in the collision had been discharged from hospitals over the weekend, with the exception of one commuter and a train driver who were still in hospital.
An internal board of inquiry led by a Metrorail senior executive had been appointed to investigate, in detail, the cause of the accident.
