SA reduces 2013 electricity consumption by 0.5%

South Africa’s consumption of electricity decreased by 0.5% year-on-year in 2013, while the country’s yearly electricity production narrowed by 0.7% over the 12 months, Statistics South Africa said on Wednesday.

According to a report released by the service, the total volume of electricity delivered by parastatal Eskom to the provinces decreased by 0.5%, or 1 064 GWh in 2013, with decreases reported in five of the nine provinces.

The largest volume decreases were recorded for the North West, which received 686 GWh less, followed by the Free State, which received 676 GWh less, and Gauteng, with 608 GWh less delivered by Eskom.

In contrast, KwaZulu-Natal recorded the largest volume increase at 771 GWh over this period.

Meanwhile, in December, consumption increased 1.3% year-on-year, contrasting with the production of electricity for the month, which narrowed by 0.9% year-on-year.

Seasonally adjusted electricity consumption increased by 2.2% month-on-month in December, following a decrease of 1.5% in November, while electricity production increased by 0.8% month-on-month in December, cancelling the decrease of 0.8% in November.

Further, seasonally adjusted electricity consumption decreased by 1.4% in the fourth quarter compared with the previous quarter, while seasonally adjusted electricity production decreased by 1.7% over the three months.
