To develop partnerships with South African companies, the central holding company for Russia's entire nuclear energy complex, State Atomic Nuclear Energy Corporation Rosatom, will hold the regional forum of nuclear industry suppliers ATOMEX Africa in Johannesburg on November 25.

At the forum participants will have the opportunity to learn more about Rosatom’s experience and prospects of cooperation with foreign suppliers. They will also be exposed to Rosatom’s procurement system, methods for protection of foreign suppliers interests and the qualification requirements of suppliers with respect to Russian-design nuclear power plant (NPP) construction.

South African government officials, nuclear and energy companies, and prospective suppliers for Rosatom projects in South Africa are invited to the forum.

“Rosatom, being a responsible vendor, is intensively developing cooperation with African countries. We already have our own history of cooperation with Africa in the nuclear sphere. With South Africa, our cooperation is the longest – starting in 1995 with from the supply of enriched uranium for the Koeberg NPP – with a number of other cooperation spheres being on today’s agenda,” explained the company.

Rosatom’s activities in Africa are based on a strong principle, namely projects must be mutually beneficial and contribute to the development of local socioeconomic sectors. Key principles are attracting investments, job creation, infrastructure development and general social responsibility.

Rosatom’s integrated solution corresponds with all post-Fukushima requirements and, apart from the energy solution of generation III+ construction, includes personnel education and training; safe and reliable solutions for the nuclear fuel cycle from a guaranteed fuel supply during NPP operation to spent fuel and radwaste management solutions; an industrial solution to support development of local industry capabilities  and financing support options.

Rosatom assigns high priority to the development of cooperation with the South African nuclear industry. The corporation is ready to take part in the implementation of the South African government’s plans for the construction of three new NPPs with six power units with a total installed capacity of 9.6 GW.

Today, localisation is an integral part of the Rosatom policy. The joint implementation of the South African nuclear generation development programme would allow the creation of 15 000 additional jobs in construction, service and operation of the new units, as well as several thousands of jobs in related industries. This would increase the revenue of South African companies to $15-billion and ensure $ 3.5-billion in tax revenues.

The localisation policy, in terms of large-scale project implementation such as the construction of NPPs, has a powerful impact on the development of local economies. This policy increases the competitiveness of energy-intensive industries and enables the supply of equipment for different projects worldwide, providing access to Rosatom’s global pipeline of projects, including equipment purchases. Rosatom plans to buy equipment to the amount of $300-billion by 2030.

Rosatom is a socially responsible company. In July, its subsidiary Rusatom Overseas and the North-West University signed a memorandum of understanding, which “offers great opportunities”.

“On the one hand, it will promote the development of technical education in South Africa and, on the other hand, provide the opportunity to find out more about modern Russian technologies, while joint research and scientific developments will provide a solid foundation for the development of further business development in South Africa,” said Rosatom.
