Power utility Eskom has recovered over R243-million in revenue since the launch of Operation Khanyisa, a national partnership campaign established in 2010 to fight electricity theft and related energy losses in South Africa.

This includes over R200-million recovered from the large power user sector, and more than R43-million in tamper fines issued between 2010 and 2013.

Eskom national sponsor for its Energy Losses Management Programme and Operation Khanyisa, Maboe Maphaka, said the money recovered was enough to bring electricity into the lives of approximately 10 000 South African households.

Since the launch of the campaign three years ago, 112 arrests and 60 convictions have been made. These convictions include the first successful prosecution of two electricity theft suspects on racketeering charges, who received a combined sentence of 111 years. In recent months, five farmers appeared in the Jan Kempsdorp Magistrates Court, in the Northern Cape, on charges of fraud relating to electricity theft. Various arrests were also made in Limpopo, including two teachers, for the sale of illegal prepaid electricity vouchers. Thus far, more than 100 customers in the province who were found to have bought these illegal vouchers were also disconnected. Tamper fines of up to R5 000 were imposed for reconnection.

“Until three years ago, electricity theft was a silent crime with very few tip-offs received. However, South Africans are finally heeding the call to report electricity theft. Since the launch of Operation Khanyisa, more than 7 000 tip-offs have been received. This, along with increased targeted meter audits, improved forensic investigations and support from law enforcement agencies, has contributed to the campaign’s success,” Maphaka said.
