The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) on Wednesday said it would not yield to State-owned Eskom’s 5.6%, five-year wage deal.

“We remain unshakable on our demands,” said NUM chief negotiator at Eskom, Helen Diatile.

She also criticised the parastatal’s decision to declare a dispute at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

“The NUM has repeatedly warned Eskom of the dangers associated with a legalistic approach to industrial relations, as well as the dangers of unilateralism, which has plunged the mining sector into chaos.”

The parties were expected to convene at 10:00 on Thursday at the CCMA for the conciliation process.
