Newtown Junction project, South Africa
Name and Location
Newtown Junction project, Gauteng, South Africa.
Client
The Atterbury Property Group. The project is backed by the Johannesburg Property Company and the South African Heritage Resources Agency, as well as some of South Africa’s leading businesses.
Project Description
The project involves the development of a new mixed-use retail and business development in the Johannesburg central business district.
Newtown’s historic but derelict Potato Shed buildings, between Museum Africa, Mary Fitzgerald Square and Carr street, will be transformed into Newtown Junction.
Newtown Junction will comprise a 46 000 m2 shopping centre, 30 000 m2 of offices space, a gym and four levels of basement parking, two levels above the parking area and three levels dedicated to office space above the retail portion. Six movie theatres have also been incorporated into the project.
The heritage-inspired design will retain and restore historical landmarks and will have a strong connection to its dynamic and cosmopolitan surrounds.
A walkway and historic railway bridge will link Newtown Junction with Museum Africa and the Market Theatre, creating a unique, connected and walkable city experience, strengthening the entire node’s appeal, the developers say.
