Project Description
Medupi will be located on an 883 ha site in Lephalale, Limpopo.

It will be a dry-cooled coal-fired, baseload power-generating plant, comprising six 794 MW units, with a 4 764 MW installed capacity – the biggest of its kind with dry cooling in the world.

The planned operational life of the station is 50 years.

The power station will use high-tech supercritical boilers, which will operate at higher temperatures and pressures than the older boilers, thereby providing greater efficiency.

It is the first baseload coal-fired station to be built in South Africa in more than 20 years and its delivery on schedule is viewed as critical.

The project will form part of the utility's integrated strategic electricity plan and is designed to be flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) ready.

Value
The cost of the project has increased from R91.2-billion to R105-billion.

Duration
The first unit, Unit 6, will be synchronised to the grid in the second half of 2014.

Latest Developments
Eskom has reported that the Unit 6 boiler feed pump one-directional testing has been successfully completed.

The Unit 4 generator motor has been threaded into the stator and, as a result, all stationary equipment between the rotor and the stator can be fitted and the generator can be coupled to the LP2 rotor.

Four water treatment boards have gone live, enabling the commissioning of the water treatment plant to start. The water treatment plant will ensure first fire of the boiler.

One-hour test runs on all of Unit 6’s boiler mills have successfully been completed, bringing it closer to its first synchronisation. Therefore, alignment can start and gearboxes can be coupled to the motors for cold commissioning readiness.

The wet run of the submerged scraper conveyer has also been successfully completed. This system removes the ash from the bottom of the boiler – another essential step in getting the boiler ready for first fire.

Six motors in the water treatment plant have been safety cleared. Mechanical connections can now be made and the control system can be commissioned once the control system is in place. The water treatment plant is important, as this will ensure demineralised water for first fire of the boiler.
