Maintenance dredging at Port of Maputo under way
A month-long maintenance dredging at the quays of the Port of Maputo started last month, during which State-owned Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA’s) new Italeni dredging vessel will be used.
The endeavour will ensure that all quays regain their designed depth.
Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) port engineer João Neves tells Engineering News that the MPDC and TNPA signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to cooperate in common interests such as infrastructure development, engineering, training and maritime services.
“This MoU acknowledges that South African and Mozambique ports are not competing, but that they are complementary. Only by building these strong partnerships will we be able to compete with the international markets as a region,” he says.
MPDC CEO Osório Lucas agrees, adding that the MoU will ensure that the ports collaborate to realise regional economic integration as the world looks to Africa for economic growth.
