Louisiana International Gulf Transfer Terminal project, US
Name and Location
Louisiana International Gulf Transfer Terminal (LIGTT) project, US.
Client
Louisiana International Gulf Transfer Terminal Authority.
Project Description
The 104 ha LIGTT port site is located in more than 21 m of water, east of the mouth of the Southwest Pass.
The new cargo transfer terminal, off Louisiana’s Gulf Coast, will be the largest deep-water port in the US and will cater to the new classes of larger, more economical ships. It will be able to accommodate Post-Panamax vessels that are expected to begin transiting the expanded Panama Canal. It will also be able to handle super Post-Panamax vessels currently in operation. The terminal will employ a hub and spoke system for transporting goods to and from the US’s heartland, expanding the country’s shipping capacity by more than two-million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year, with the goal of ultimately expanding capacity up to 3.5-million TEUs a year.
