The project involves the construction of a 960 MW coal-fired power plant in Lamu County.

The project will cost an estimated $2-billion, about $500-million of which will be funded by equity and the balance through debt.

Duration
The power plant is part of government’s target to generate 5 000 MW of electricity in the country by 2017.

Latest Developments
Following a rigorous tender review process led by an independent technical evaluation committee, a consortium led by Kenyan companies – Gulf Energy and Centum Investment Company – has emerged as the winning bidder of the Kenyan government’s tender for the development of the coal-fired power plant. Gulf and Centum led a consortium that comprised Sichuan Electric Power Design & Consulting Company, Sichuan No 3 Power Construction Company (both subsidiaries of Chinese energy giant PowerChina) and China Huadian Corporation Power Operation Company.
