PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Graphite developer Kibaran Resources has increased its production estimates for its flagship Tanzanian projects by some 50%.

The miner reported on Monday that an updated growth strategy had determined that the Epanko and Merelani-Arusha graphite projects could deliver a combined 150 000 t/y of concentrate by the sixth year of mining and processing operations, up from the initial estimate of 100 000 t/y outlined in January this year.

MD Andrew Spinks said the project enhancement followed substantial corporate progress in recent weeks in attracting German government backing.

“While we appreciate the technical perspectives of the longer-term production targets, we will, for now, seek to meet current demand by planning to start at a prudent rate of 40 000 t/y and then build output quickly in response to future increases in demand.”

Kibaran was expected to ramp up production to 84 000 t/y during the second to fourth years of operation and would again increase production to 150 000 t/y by the fifth or sixth years of operation.

Kibaran has secured all mining licences and environmental approvals for the Epanko project and the company has started debt financing discussions. It was anticipated that first production would start some 17 months after the completion of project financing.

The company also has a third project in Tanzania, Tanga, which it planned to include in its push to strategically position Kibaran to obtain the largest market share and strategic partners outside of China for the refectory, spherical battery market and high-end graphite markets.

Kibaran recently signed a 30 000 t/y offtake agreement, over a ten-year period, with Germany’s ThyssenKrupp and a sophisticated European graphite market trader.
