Innovative cloud computing software launched locally
Portable desktop replacement device Cloudgate was launched by application delivery company Cloudware at the African EduWeek which took place in Johannesburg in July.
The device brings Android and Windows together, has no support requirements and provides improved security for business.
Cloudware head of product Jonathan Young said Cloudgate is just one example of many innovative technologies that can be applied by delivering the functionality of a traditional desktop PC at a fraction of the cost.
“You simply plug in a screen, mouse and keyboard into a hand-sized device and you will not only have a full Android operating system but also access to any Windows application based on the central server,” he said at the launch.
Young added that bandwith is not a constraint and that the product is designed for low-bandwidth environments, so that it works using a cellular connection or satellite, commenting that Cloudgate devices draw just 10 W of power – the same amount of energy as an energy-saving lightbulb – which makes the use of solar power entirely feasible.
“State-of-the-art computers could be put in schools and in four years time could cover the whole country,” he says.
He notes that according to the Children’s Instititute at the University of Cape Town, South Africa has 26 000 schools and 12.2- million learners.
