Harambee bus rapid transit system, South Africa
Name and Location
Harambee bus rapid transit (BRT) system, Gauteng, South Africa.
Client
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
Project Description
Harambee aims to revolutionise public transportation in Ekurhuleni.
The 56 km route runs from Tembisa to Vosloorus through Isando, Kempton Park, OR Tambo International Airport and Boksburg. It is expected that Phase 1A will run from Tembisa to Rhodesfield – with a feeder service to OR Tambo and a service to Boksburg and Vosloorus.
Phase 1B will provide a full service from Rhodesfield to OR Tambo, while Phase 1C will run from OR Tambo to Boksburg.
The last phase will run between Boksburg and Vosloorus.
The buses will carry 44 seated and 44 standing passengers. Once completed, the Harambee system will link to the City of Johannesburg’s Rea Vaya BRT system and Tshwane’s A Re Yeng BRT system.
Harambee will be operated by a traffic management centre in Kempton Park, which will control all Ekurhuleni’s transport services using closed-circuit television cameras, as well as vehicle tracking and navigation systems in the buses and at the stations.
