Eskom implements load shedding on Tuesday
State-owned power provider Eskom has implemented Stage 1 load shedding, which will run until 22:00 on Tuesday.
The utility, which was currently facing a shortage in electricity generation capacity, on Tuesday morning reported that it would implement 12 hours of load shedding following problems at its Koeberg station, in Cape Town.
However, this planned load shedding did not take place. It had been reported that the utility cancelled rolling blackouts, because it had fixed technical faults on some of its generators.
"Blackouts have been suspended as the units are now back online," Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe was reported as saying.
“We will communicate if there is a need to move from Stage 1 to Stage 2,” the parastatal noted in an afternoon statement, adding that the power system remained constrained and would remain so for the remainder of the season.
“Any extra load or faults in the system may necessitate the need to go into load shedding. We, therefore, urge all electricity customers to reduce their consumption to reduce the severity of load shedding,” Eskom advised.
