Eskom executive appointed to board of international research organisation
State-owned power utility Eskom has gained a seat on the board of directors of an international research organisation, giving the utility direct access to energy research and the opportunity to influence the strategic direction and work programme of the electric power industry.
Eskom transmission and sustainability group executive Thava Govender was appointed to the board of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), which undertakes research and development relating to the generation, delivery and use of electricity for the benefit of the public.
“The organisation bring together its scientists and engineers as well as experts from academia and industry to help address challenges in electricity, including reliability, efficiency, affordability, health, safety and the environment,” Eskom acting CEO Brian Molefe said.
Govender, who has worked at Eskom for 24 years, noted that the world was seeking solutions for more sustainable ways of generating electricity, delivering and ensuring access to the resource for all and using power to grow economies and “make lives easier.”
Govender currently served on Eskom’s social, ethics and sustainability committee, was Eskom Academy of Learning chairperson and a director at Eskom Enterprises.
He previously served as governor on the Board of the World Association of Nuclear Operators Atlanta Centre.
