The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) is inviting bids from eligible firms interested in designing, building and commissioning a 10 MW diesel power generation plant.

Escom says bidding documents are obtainable on payment of a nonrefundable fee of $100 or its equivalent in a freely convertible currency.

The deadline for the submission of bids is September 12.

Escom is carrying out maintenance at its power stations, using the proceeds of a $350- million compact grant that the Malawi government has obtained from US federal agency the Millennium Challenge Corporation to revamp its energy sector.

The diesel-powered plant that the corporation is to construct will help bridge the power supply gap when some power plants are closed to allow for ongoing maintenance works.

Malawi derives about 90% of its electricity from hydropower plants located on the Shire river, an outlet of Lake Malawi.
