Denel is a State-owned company (SOC) that provides innovative defence, security, aerospace and related technology solutions as a strategic partner for the South African National Defence Force as well as selected clients in global markets. The group’s capabilities include defence, aerospace and advanced manufacturing. Denel’s defence capabilities date back more than 70 years, when some of its first manufacturing plants were established. Between them, the Denel entities have a combined experience of more than 200 years. Denel SOC was incorporated in April 1992.

Denel provides a wide range of sophisticated services and solutions that enhance the value of its products. The solutions are designed to meet unique user requirements and provide full life cycle support. Denel products include combat turrets, artillery and vehicle systems, missiles, command and control, maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) of aircraft, avionics upgrades, testing of airborne systems, munitions, development and design of aerostructures components, as well as humanitarian services, including demining.

The company’s core operating divisions are clustered according to geographical location and similarity of business and include its Irene campus, which hosts Denel Dynamics, under which the Denel Integrated Systems Solutions division is now incorporated, and the Denel corporate headquarters – including Denel Industrial Properties. It also has a campus in Lyttelton, where Denel Land Systems and Denel Mechem are based, and its Kempton Park campus, where Denel Aviation – including Denel Technical Academy and Denel Aerostructures – are based.

Other campuses include Denel Overberg Test Range, in the Western Cape, and Denel Pretoria Metal Pressings, in Pretoria West.
