The civil works for the Western Cape-based Saldanha Bay industrial development zone’s (IDZ’s) Wastewater Treatment Works project are under way. The mechanical and electrical contract has also been awarded for the project upgrade, which will increase the capacity of the treatment works from 2.5 Mℓ to 5 Mℓ.

The installation of sewers for the internal services in the back-of-port started in April, while the construction of site offices, which will be a multi-user facility for contractors and consultants, are soon to be completed.

Moreover, State-owned entity the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has begun construction on the IDZ’s offshore supply base, which is expected to be commissioned in September next year.

Meanwhile, 14 learners from Saldanha Bay have successfully completed their apprenticeship in welding, boilermaking and fitting as part of the IDZ’s Artisan Experiential Learning Programme at the Armscor Dockyard, in Simonstown. These learners are now due to take their trade test for their trade qualifications.

Saldanha Bay emphasises that acquiring the necessary skills set to supply the specialised oil and gas industry requires support and collaboration from stakeholders, commitment from the West Coast community and the facilitation of the requisite development programmes.

Funding has been successfully obtained from the Department of Trade and Industry’s Special Economic Zones Fund, as well as the Manufacturing, Engineering and Related Services Education and Training Authority, and the Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority, for various accredited beginner and advanced specialised skills, artisanal and entrepreneurial programmes aimed at benefiting over 1 000 individuals in the Saldanha Bay area.

These skills programmes will start at the end of September 2015.

Meanwhile, talks on the oil and gas services industry are hosted on the second Thursday of every month to provide the Saldanha Bay community with information on the industry and updates on development in the IDZ.

The Saldanha Bay IDZ aims to continue attracting investors into the zone through investor meetings, presentations and exhibitions at key industry events and seminars both domestically and internationally.

Together with TNPA, the IDZ recently attended the Offshore Europe conference in Aberdeen, which saw over 60 000 attendees. Further, the Saldanha Bay IDZ will be exhibiting at Africa Oil Week 2015, which takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from October 26 to October 30.

Strategic partnerships with the Transnet group and the Saldanha Bay municipality and government interventions such as Operation Phakisa and Khulisa are the result of long-term joint planning and are critical to the success of the IDZ project.

October 31 will mark two years since the IDZ was designated to help stimulate economic growth and sustainable jobs in the West Coast region. The State-owned company and operator of IDZ has plans to develop a world-class oilfield services hub in response to global demand for dedicated repair and maintenance harbours in Africa.
