Project Description
The Block Island wind farm will be the first offshore development in the US.

The 30 MW wind farm is located 4.82 km off the south-east coast of Block Island, in Rhode Island.

It comprises five Alstom Haliade 150-6 MW wind turbines, capable of generating more than 125 000 MWh/y – enough to power more than 17 000 homes.

Power will be exported to the mainland electricity grid using a 34 km, bidirectional Block Island transmission system – a submarine cable proposed to make landfall in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

Value
The project will cost about $290-millon to implement.

Duration
Construction of the wind farm is well under way and is scheduled for commercial operation by the end of 2016.

Latest Developments
The project has reached financial close.

Mott MacDonald was lenders technical adviser during the project’s due diligence phase and is now monitoring construction as independent engineer in an ongoing capacity.
