The Energy Intensive User Group (EIUG) has appointed BHP Billiton’s GM for energy, Kevin Morgan, as its new chairperson, following the recent departure of previous chairperson Mike Rossouw from resources group GlencoreXstrata to engineering consultancy Hatch Goba.

At a meeting of the organisation’s elected council, which took place on February 7 following the EIUG’s recent annual general meeting, Sasol GM supply chain: strategic sourcing Piet van Staden was elected vice chairperson.

Rossouw, who served in the position for a number of years, was ineligible for re-election, owing to a resolution stipulating that office bearers be in the employ of member companies.

The EIUG has 31 members drawn from the natural resources and manufacturing sectors. The companies, which have combined yearly revenues of about R800-billion, consume about 44% of South Africa’s electrical energy.

The EIUG expresses its appreciation to Rossouw for his “tremendous contribution” in protecting the position of EIUG member companies. “He has played a very considerable role in the energy affairs of our country over an extended period, which has benefited all consumers. We will miss his energy, dedication and his drive to ‘get the job done’, but are pleased that he will remain engaged in energy affairs albeit in a different role.”

Rossouw has been appointed as Hatch Goba’s new director for power.

The EIUG indicated that it would continue to work collaboratively with government, Eskom and other stakeholders to address the country’s energy challenges.

It said it would continue to focus on security of supply and addressing stumbling blocks to the introduction of independent power producers. Other areas of focus would include energy governance and South Africa’s long-term pricing outlook.
