JSE-listed construction and engineering group Basil Read’s Roads division has been awarded a R240-million contract to build the New Redhouse Chelsea Interchange in Port Elizabeth.

The contract, which was awarded by the South African National Roads Agency, will entail the construction of a 3.3 km dual-carriageway arterial road with four associated ramps of 4 km in length.

The scope of work also includes the construction of two 14.5-m-wide four-span bridges over the National Route 2 (N2), a 35-m-wide two-span bridge over the Cyclopia wetland, two 14.5-m-wide three-span bridges over the Baakens river and one major culvert.

Work will start in mid-October and will take about 22 months to complete.

When completed, the interchange will provide access from the N2 to the new Bay West Mall, which is currently being built in the western suburbs of Port Elizabeth.

“We are pleased to have been awarded this contract in Port Elizabeth where Basil Read is expanding its construction and engineering services. We are looking forward to being part of the infrastructure growth in this strong industrial hub,” Basil Read CEO Marius Heyns commented.
