South African vehicles affected by big Toyota, Nissan recalls
Japanese carmakers Toyota and Nissan have announced a global recall of more than 6.5-million vehicles following concern that consumers could be harmed by faulty airbags.
This adds to the more than 17-million vehicles that ten automakers have recalled since 2008 for faulty airbags made by Takata, reports Bloomberg, while Reuters places this number at roughly 31-million vehicles in total.
The local recall to remedy the problem involves more than 200 000 vehicles.
Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) says in a statement that it has initiated a recall campaign to replace Takata-produced front airbag inflators for Corolla, Yaris and Run-X models produced between 2002 and 2007.
The number of affected vehicles is 195 630.
Just more than 28 000 RAV4, Hilux and Fortuner models manufactured from July 2003 to December 2005 are also affected.
TSAM says in a statement that certain types of airbag inflators manufactured by Takata were found to have a potential for moisture intrusion over time.
As a result, they may be susceptible to abnormal deployment in a crash.
The relationship of moisture intrusion, if any, to the risk of inflator rupture is not known.
“To date, no injuries or fatalities caused by this condition have been reported in the approximately five-million – [Toyota only] –affected vehicles worldwide.”
TSAM says the recall campaign will start once all the required components are available at local Toyota dealers.
Affected owners will be notified by a Toyota dealer to bring their vehicles in for service.
The replacement of the component will take one to two hours, at no cost to the owner.
Nissan South Africa says its recall campaign targets the previous-generation Nissan Almera, produced at the Rosslyn plant, in Pretoria, from 2004 to 2007.
Nissan says it will notify affected customers, “beginning in June”, adding that it will be done at no cost to the customer.
