Name and Location
Aquafarming facility project, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Client
Coega Development Corporation (CDC).

Project Description
A feasibility study has been completed on the proposed development of an aqua-farming facility on 300 ha in Zone 10 of the Coega industrial development zone (IDZ).

The envisaged facility will focus on the commercial cultivation of marine animals and plants.

The feasibility showed that the environmental conditions were ideal for abalone farming, for which the CDC plans to dedicate 80 ha by 2020. Seaweed could also potentially be farmed to complement abalone farming, as the seaweed can be used for abalone feed and in various pharmaceutical applications.

In addition, finfish farming has been proposed on 120 ha in the IDZ.

Value
R2-billion.

Duration

Latest Developments
Currently, the CDC is working on two environmental-impact assessments – one for a seawater abstraction and discharge outlet and another for the land-based activities pertaining to aquaculture.
