A year after being absorbed into JSE-listed Altron subsidiary Power Technologies (Powertech), QuadPro Power Solutions has secured orders valued at R280-million in three identified growth markets, Altron said on Monday.

Altron last year acquired a 51% stake in QuadPro for an undisclosed amount and merged the turnkey substation solutions provider with Powertech’s Power System Integrators unit, IST Energy.

The newly renamed Powertech Quadpro identified infrastructure development, renewable energy and Africa as new growth targets, Powertech QuadPro CEO Harry Browne said.

The division has secured a R36-million project from the Tlokwe municipality, a R7-million contract from the Transnet National Ports Authority to upgrade substation switchgears in Richards Bay, and a R35-million contract for the construction of a substation for the Randfontein municipality to electrify the Mohlakeng development.

Other contracts included an R18-million upgrade of Edenvale Industries’ 6.6 kV switching station for the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality and a R23-million Hall Street substation upgrade for the Sol Plaatje municipality, in Kimberley.

Powertech QuadPro also secured two Western Cape-based renewable-energy contracts, valued at nearly R80-million, supplying substations for both State-owned power utility Eskom’s Sere wind farm project, near Vredendal, and Acciona’s/Aveng’s Labonne project near Gouda.

The group’s African ambitions gained some traction after it formed a joint venture with Zambia-based partner Laatu, which landed its first contract in September with State-owned power company Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation (Zesco). The R70-million contract covered work at three of Zesco’s substations.
