Zondereinde strike persists despite interdict
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Striking rock drill operators at JSE-listed Northam Platinum’s Zondereinde mine have still not returned to work, despite being served with an interdict issued by the Labour Court, which ruled that the current work stoppage at the mine was unprotected.
The interdict directed the roughly 500 workers to resume their normal duties.
Northam indicated that the company’s management was attempting to secure a meeting with the senior structures of the National Union of Mineworkers and welcomed further talks at an operational level.
The company further said in a statement that the dismissal of employees was a last resort and would follow management’s various appeals to the rock drill operators to resume their normal duties and to use the dispute resolution procedures available to them.
On Tuesday, Northam reported that the strike had resulted in it losing a total of 165 kg, or 5 300 oz, of metal-in-concentrate production, along with revenues of R62.7-million.
