Independent power producer Yellow Door Energy has completed the development phase for a 48 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Leeudoringstad, in North West.

Construction will begin in the second quarter of the year and the solar PV plant is expected to be operational by the second quarter of 2025.

It will wheel the clean electricity to multiple customers using the Eskom transmission grid, and thereby provide customers with a predictable tariff and significant electricity cost savings.

A significant portion of the shovel-ready 48 MW project has been committed to companies, and Yellow Door Energy is in discussion with reputable businesses to offtake the remaining capacity through power purchase agreements, the company says.

“This is only the beginning as the next phase of development entails an additional 192 MW of solar PV capacity, bringing the total to 240 MW in Leeudoringstad,” adds Yellow Door Energy CEO Jeremy Crane.

“We are excited to be helping companies in mining and other heavy industries significantly reduce their energy costs and benefit from a clean source of electricity. This project positions Yellow Door Energy as a major player in the solar wheeling market and supports South Africa’s just transition in building a more sustainable and energy-independent future,” he says.

Further, Yellow Door Energy has strong broad-based black economic empowerment credentials and is committed to helping businesses secure their energy supply, lower electricity costs and advance South Africa’s just transition, he adds.
