South African Ambassador to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Xavier Carim has been elected to chair the Dispute Settlement Body of the WTO General Council.

The General Council was the highest decision-making body of the WTO in between Ministerial Conferences.

Trade and Industry Minister Dr Rob Davies congratulated Carim on his appointment, noting that it was, in part, recognition of the important role South Africa played in the WTO.

“It is an important recognition of what our country can bring to the multilateral trading system,” he said in a statement.

Carim was appointed with strong support from the WTO Africa group.
