Transport Minister Dipuo Peters on Sunday condemned recent arson attacks on Metrorail trains in the Western Cape.

“Law enforcement agencies are called upon to arrest perpetrators of this senseless destruction of property, criminality and sabotage,” said Peters in a statement issued by the transport department.

On Friday morning, a train was set alight, while another four carriages were destroyed by a fire in Kraaifontein's staging yard.  On Friday evening, another three train carriages were set alight at the Esplanade Station near Cape Town.

This followed on from an incident, last weekend, when two adjoining trains were set alight at platforms 11 and 12 at Cape Town station.

Metrorail has previously suggested that those behind the arson are illegal strikers.

On Sunday, Peters said that an investigation into the incidents should be conducted by the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (PRASA).

“If there are any grievances against PRASA, these must be raised within the proper channels created by our constitutional and legal framework,” she said.

Severe commuter delays – and reroutings - have resulted from the arson attacks.
